Hi, I’m Joan Awung Foretia, the heart and hands behind Chic Afriq Fashion & Accessories (CAFA) — a brand born out of love, legacy, and limitless creativity.
My fashion journey began in Cameroon, watching my mother, a talented seamstress, sew not only clothes but confidence and connection. By age 10, I was already hemming and ironing dresses, and even without a machine, I stitched clothing by hand — driven by a deep love for creation and culture.
When I moved to America in 1988, I bought my first sewing machine. Since then, I’ve sewn for my family, friends, and eventually for a growing community of women seeking handmade fashion that blends culture, beauty, and meaning.
Chic Afriq was officially launched in 2018, but its roots go back much further. Before then, I ran an eBay store — GreatDealsFromJoan — selling African headwraps, fabrics, jewelry, and home décor. In 2025, fascinators were added to our fashion family: regal headpieces crafted for women who want to turn heads and tell stories.
Today, Chic Afriq Fashion is not just a brand.
It’s a celebration of African identity, style, and self-worth.
Every piece I create is handmade with intention — inspired by tradition, crafted with care, and designed to help women look good and feel proud.
As a designer, educator, and caregiver (with 25+ years running my assisted living business, Dynamic Nurturing Services), I’ve seen how deeply our outer image can affect our inner spirit. How you dress can shift how you feel. And how you feel shapes how you show up.
